In many ways, caregiving in hospice and palliative care is just like any other kind of caregiving: you do your best to make sure your loved one is comfortable and content, and because of that, often find that you have less time for other activities.
By the same token, hospice and palliative caregiving is also unique in important ways. The emphasis now will be on comfort more than cure, and on quality of life more than quantity. You may find yourself coping with your loved one's decline or even death, even as you do your very best to help. This can be a complex and challenging journey for everyone involved. Know that we here at HealthPartners Hospice of the Lakes & Palliative Care are deeply concerned about your experience, and want it to be as positive and well-supported as possible.
We have found that good self-care is often top-priority in a hospice and palliative situation. What you are doing for your loved one is so very valuable, that it's important to sustain your own strength and resilience. This means getting rest as best you can, eating as well as possible, finding a little time each day for your own needs, and inviting others to help you. Remember, many people feel that helping out in palliative or hospice settings is a privilege and an honor. When you ask others to help, you are sharing something special with them. Never hesitate to call on us. We're your partners.
