HealthPartners recruiting patients for nationwide cholesterol study
AIM HIGH study to determine most effective treatment for cholesterol management
Feb. 5, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – HealthPartners announced it is one of the largest sites to participate in a national clinical study sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Association on cholesterol management and it is now actively recruiting participants for the study.
The study, AIM HIGH, enables participants to receive cholesterol medications and access to medical experts at no cost to them or their insurers for an average of five years. The purpose of the study is to determine if an FDA-approved drug that increases good cholesterol levels, combined with common drugs that lower bad cholesterol, will reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart disease.
"Nearly 20 percent of Americans over the age of 20 have high cholesterol, which brings with it a significant risk of heart disease," said JoAnn Sperl-Hillen, M.D., principal investigator of this study for the HealthPartners Research Foundation. "Because heart disease can be fatal, it is extremely important that we understand the best methods for managing cholesterol levels, and this study will bring us closer to achieving that goal."
HealthPartners is one of 80 sites in the United States and Canada currently working to recruit the over 3000 patients who will participate in the study.
If you have a history of heart, vascular disease or stroke and would like to learn more about the study or find out if you are eligible to participate, call the research staff at the HealthPartners Riverside Clinic at (612) 373-5547 or visit healthpartners.com or the AIM HIGH website at www.aimhigh-heart.com.
