HealthPartners researcher wins 2008 Shepard Award
New England Journal of Medicine article named "Best Paper"
June 17, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – HealthPartners researcher, Thomas E. Kottke, MD., and his coauthors have won the 2008 Shepard Award for Best Paper in the Assessment and Epidemiology category. The paper was reviewed by scientists from across the Centers for Disease Control and selected for representing the best in medical science.
"This is a great honor to be recognized for our work on this topic," said Dr. Kottke. "I'd like to congratulate all of my colleagues who worked together to make this study possible."
The paper, "Explaining the decrease in U.S. deaths from coronary disease, 1980-2000," was published last year in the New England Journal of Medicine as a Special Article. It has already been highly cited in other literature.
The study looks at how much the decrease in deaths from coronary disease can be attributed to medical and surgical treatments and how much can be attributed to changes in cardiovascular risk factors. The study concluded that about half of the decline may be due to the reduction of major cardiovascular risk factors and about half due to evidence-based medical therapies.
