Steps for a healthy time at the great Minnesota get together

HealthPartners dietitians offer tips for eating healthier, walking off calories

August 19, 2009

ST. PAUL, Minn., - With endless options for deep fried cuisine and 54 variations of food on a stick, HealthPartners dietitians have tips on how to avoid thousands of calories and eat healthier at this year's Minnesota State Fair.

"It's easy to recognize that many fair foods are high in fat, sugar, and salt," said Sarah Johnson, registered dietitian. "But it is possible to enjoy these treats without going completely overboard." Johnson offers the following tips to eat healthier at the fair this year:
  • Don't show up hungry - eat before you go or bring simple snacks along.
  • Portion control - split an order with someone else.
  • Find a spot to sit down and eat - it is easy to overeat when wandering and not paying attention.
  • Open your eyes to other food possibilities beyond the traditional - eat other choices such as nuts, fruits, yogurt, salads, and grilled meats on skewers.
  • Drink a lot of water - you likely will be walking around in the heat, stick to water instead of sugar-filled sodas.
Dietitians also warn about being tempted by new foods, such as Famous Dave's peach-glazed pig cheeks, sausage wrapped in a spiral cut potato and the fry dog which is a hot dog encased in batter and fries. "Everyone wants to try the unique food but you just have to watch it and stay in control," said Johnson. Other new foods this year include healthy foods like a half watermelon, caprese salad on a stick, maple syrup soda and organic apples at the Eco-Experience Building where HealthPartners partners with Renewing the Countryside to help promote the health benefits of eating local healthy food.
