What is Medicare?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 years of age and older, people younger than 65 who have certain disabilities, and people of any age with permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant. Medicare has three parts:
Part A (hospital) helps you pay for inpatient hospital stays, critical care, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health care. Most people age 65 and older are eligible for Part A coverage at no cost.
Part B (medical) helps you pay for doctors services, outpatient hospital care, physical therapy, occupational therapy and home health care that is not covered under Part A. It also provides limited benefits for diagnostic tests, ambulance transport, preventive care including mammography and PSA tests and durable medical equipment and supplies. To be covered under voluntary Part B, you must pay a monthly premium.
Part D (prescription drug) was introduced in 2006, Medicare members can choose to be covered by a Medicare Prescription Drug Program (Part D) that helps pay for prescription drugs.
