How do I know which option to choose?

Before you buy health coverage, you should consider the following:

  • How much insurance protection do you need?
For example, how concerned are you about the possibility of unexpected or unusually high health care costs? Even people in excellent health can have an unexpected event and suddenly have a lot of medical expenses. If you want this protection, it is important to protect yourself with good coverage before you are ill or have a change in health status.

  • Do you want coverage for certain benefits, like prescription drugs, routine physician exams, travel coverage, and/or dental?
Determine the benefits of the most interest to you. Make sure you verify those benefits are covered on the plan you are considering, if they have any restrictions, and how much they cost.

  • How important is doctor choice?
Some plans allow you to see any physician you want that accepts Medicare but you may have to pay more (or you may have higher cost-sharing).

  • How much will the plan cost me?
How much insurance protection you buy in addition to your monthly Medicare Part B premiums will affect your estimated "out-of-pocket" costs. Some options cost you only a little but also protect you only a little; others cost more but cover more costs when and if you get sick or need care. Health insurance plans also have different ways of sharing costs with you. For example, in addition to your plan premium, you might pay half the costs of dental care but almost nothing for a doctor's visit.
