When can I enroll, change plans and add or drop coverage?

Everyone eligible for Medicare can add or drop coverage and change plans during Medicare's annual open enrollment from November 15 through December 31. Your coverage would begin on January 1st of the following year.

You can also join when you first become eligible for Medicare. This period lasts from three months before your 65th birthday until three months after you turn 65.

There may also be other times of the year when you can change your coverage, depending on your circumstances. For example:
  • If you move out of the service area of the plan you are in;
  • If you have both Medicare and Medicaid;
  • If you live in, or move into or out of an institution (such as a nursing home); or
  • If you have creditable prescription drug coverage and that coverage ends.
Medicare Advantage Plan members, such as those on HealthPartners® Classic plan, can also join or switch Medicare Advantage plans between January 1 and March 31 of any year. However, you cannot join or drop Medicare prescription drug coverage during this time.

If you have questions about these different enrollment periods, contact 800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227), seven days a week/24 hours a day. TTY users should call 877-486-2048.
