Chronic conditions to cause greatest health care costs increases
New study: Aging boomers with congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease projected to have greatest impact on increasing costs
April 23, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - A new study funded by HealthPartners Research Foundation and published in the current Disease Management Journal is the first to identify chronic conditions projected to account for the greatest per capita cost increases over the next several decades as a result of the aging U.S. population.
"These findings are significant because this is the first time projected health care cost changes due to aging have been reported by chronic condition," said E. Mary Martini, the study's co-author and senior consultant, HealthPartners Health Informatics.
"While aging of the U.S. population is not projected to be a major driver of the rising cost of health care overall, only 0.3 percent annually from 2000 2050, we project per capita costs due to specific chronic conditions will dramatically increase," said Dr. Nancy Garrett, also a study co-author.- Congestive heart failure 75 percent increase
- Coronary artery disease 48 percent increase
- Diabetes 24 percent increase
- Asthma 4 percent increase
The two areas with the greatest decreases in projected per capita costs include:- Pregnancy and infertility care 12 percent decrease
- Chemical dependency 7 percent decrease
- Psychiatric conditions 1 percent decrease
The study also includes age and gender per capita cost curves for each chronic condition. Contact Chris Iles to obtain a complete copy of the study.
