Story of the week: Tom, age 534
Tom has an advanced stage of a chronic condition that can slow or stop the flow of blood throughout the body. The disease can cause heart attack, stroke, or even death within five minutes. He lives in a western suburb and recently had surgery at Regions Hospital. Because he is not sick enough to be declared disabled, he does not qualify for Medicaid. He has $27,000 in hospital bills that will be covered by GAMC.
