General Assistance Medical Care Weekly Report: 126 Days to 2010 Session
October 5, 2009
It's been four and a half months since the Minnesota Legislature adjourned. In just 126 days, lawmakers will begin the 2010 session. That gives lawmakers only a few weeks to pass legislation that can replace GAMC, which will be eliminated in March. Unless the state finds a solution, 34,000 Minnesotans who earn $8,000 dollars a year or less will lose their health care coverage.

Story of the week: Jackson 3
Jackson is an uninsured student in his early 30s. He has diabetes and blood sugar control is vital to his overall health. When Jackson's blood sugar was out of control, he needed immediate medical intervention. He was admitted and treated at Regions Hospital and now has almost $10,000 in medical bills. A financial counselor at Regions helped him apply for GAMC to cover his medical care.
