HealthPartners announces 2007 bonuses for primary, specialty care
November 7, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – HealthPartners today announced that 38 primary and specialty care groups earned $860,000 for meeting quality measures on care and patient satisfaction. The awards are part of HealthPartners pay-for-performance program which will payout a total of $21 million for meeting goals in 2006.
The Partners in Excellence bonuses, which are being announced at the Nicollet Island Inn, recognize excellent and superior care for areas including diabetes, coronary artery disease, asthma, depression, measuring BMI, evidence-based cervical cancer screening and generic drug use. Five medical groups were the top performers in 2006: Family HealthServices Minnesota, HealthPartners Clinics, North Suburban Family Physicians and Northwest Family Physicians and Park Nicollet Health Services each earned multiple awards.
Improved patient outcomes "To earn these awards, providers are changing the way they deliver care and that is improving outcomes for all patients," said Pat Courneya, M.D. HealthPartners associate medical director. He noted that delivering all of the necessary care for diabetes for example prevents 80 heart attacks, 120 limb amputations and 320 cases of eye disease each year among HealthPartners members. "This is very hard to do, but our provider community has the creativity and determination to improve care for this difficult disease," said Courneya. In addition, HealthPartners is ranked in the top 25 percent nationally in the following areas according to the 2007 U.S.News & World Report/NCQA America's Best Health Plans issue:
- Cervical cancer screening
- Heart disease treatment
- Diabetes care
- Immunizations for children
- Depression care
- Low back pain
"This is well-deserved recognition for providers, but the ultimate success is the impact on patients," said Babette Apland HealthPartners senior vice president for health and care management. Introduced in 1997, HealthPartners Partners in Quality program rewards providers in 76 primary care and 40 specialty groups and 16 hospitals, pharmacies, and physical therapy practices throughout Minnesota and bordering states. The measures are based on guidelines developed by the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement which represents more than 7,500 physicians in Minnesota.
