Auditory Brainstem Implants - MC

Definitions
Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) is similar to a cochlear implant, but the electrode is implanted in the brainstem, rather than the cochlea of the ear. This brainstem electrode is placed next to the cochlear nuclei. The electrode is connected to an external microphone and processor, which allows the patient to identify sound.

Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is a genetic disorder related to defects in chromosome 22. NF2 causes tumors to grow on the beginning and ending of nerves. Tumors can grow on both auditory (hearing) nerves. When these tumors are removed, the patient becomes deaf.
