HealthPartners has expanded its PowerUp Fruits and Veggies Rx program to provide more adults with access to nutritious food, reinforcing its commitment to support health and well-being in all stages of life. The expansion allows eligible members enrolled in the Minnesota Senior Health Options (MSHO) (HMO SNP) plan to receive two $25 vouchers each month to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables.

Since 2012, PowerUp has encouraged kids and families to build healthier habits through better nutrition and physical activity. That family-focused approach became the basis of the PowerUp Fruits and Veggies Rx program, which began by giving families produce vouchers after summer wellness visits. Building on this experience, HealthPartners adapted the program to support older adults who may benefit from additional support.

Eligible MSHO members can choose from a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables at participating stores, then use the vouchers toward their purchase, giving them more agency over a produce-rich diet tailored to their preferences. The vouchers include summaries, which detail methods of preparation and the nutrients found in different types of fruits and vegetables. Members with certain chronic conditions receive this special supplemental benefit to help them enjoy a nutritious diet.

“The vouchers help eliminate barriers that might prevent members from accessing nutritious food critical to health and well-being,” said Marna Canterbury, HealthPartners vice president of community health and partnerships. “They empower members to select their favorites or try new varieties while considering how different fruits and vegetables can fit into their meals, diet patterns and daily lives.”

Members have used the benefit widely and have responded positively since it was introduced earlier this year. In the first months of the expanded program, more than 5,200 members received vouchers, with nearly 4,700 redeemed.

MSHO is a health plan that combines medical assistance (Medicaid) and Medicare for people age 65 and older. The plan includes comprehensive medical, dental and prescription drug coverage as well as personalized support and additional benefits to support healthy living.
