Meet Matthew A. Banfield, MD
I specialize in minimally invasive surgery, including vaginal hysterectomy, total laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic fibroid surgery (laparoscopic myomectomy), laparoscopic Essure removal and office hysteroscopy for diagnosis and treatment of menstrual disorders. I give lectures on contraception and minimally invasive surgery, and train other doctors on these techniques.
I spend about half of my practice caring for both high- and low-risk pregnancies. I encourage VBAC in appropriate candidates and vaginal delivery of twins. I was the University of Minnesota OB-GYN residency site director at Methodist Hospital from 2014 until 2019, when I assumed the position of Methodist Hospital vice chair of the OB-GYN team at Park Nicollet.
The most important element of my care is making sure patients understand what is going on with their health, their options for treatment and the advantages or disadvantages of each alternative. In the same way an attorney or an accountant helps clients understand legal or tax questions, my goal is to provide information that is easily understood so patients can make informed decisions that best meet their needs.

More about me
Among the many competing motivations, being useful to people on a practical, day-to-day basis was why I went to medical school. Helping people navigate the complexities of modern medicine is what continues to drive me every day.
Patients can expect me to be down-to-earth and to provide easily understood explanations of diagnoses and treatment options. Much of my specialty requires explaining complex biological processes, so patients can expect to leave with a thorough understanding.
Outside of my practice, I enjoy long distance running, cooking, spending time at our family lake house in Wisconsin and traveling.
Exercising, sleeping in and eating a balanced diet.
A running maniac! A lot of my free time is spent running or talking about the next time I have a race.
I wanted to be either a forest ranger or a professional fisherman.
I’m the youngest of five and my dad told all us kids years ago, "Always wear a white hat." It’s a metaphor for being the good guy, never making negative assumptions about anyone or their motivations and always giving others the benefit of the doubt.
The seasons! So many distinct weather patterns and changes to the scenery make it a fun place to live. July and August are my favorite months, mostly for sweet corn and pontoon cruising lake time, and are just barely ahead of winter as my favorite time of year.
Awarded membership into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society during my fourth year of medical school Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology Member of American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopy Assistant Clinical Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Minnesota U of M Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Site Director at Methodist Hospital Methodist Hospital Vice Chair, Park Nicollet Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
I try to be personable, no-nonsense and approachable. I try to make my practice like it was in the old days; when you knew your doctor, they knew you and you could expect a phone call to talk about things if there were questions.
This doctor provides care at the following hospitals, but may not take patients at all of them. Talk to your doctor to see where you can go.
