Meet Bernadette M. Hightower Hughes, MD
My practice involves taking the time to listen carefully to my patients. I also create personalized approaches to health care that they can agree with and understand. Beyond obstetrics and gynecology, I have skills in many other areas that allow me to help treat the whole person. For example, I often help patients get started with cholesterol medicine, pinpoint thyroid issues or find the right resources to treat depression. My patients cover a wide span of ages, and I especially enjoy working with women as they go through menopause.
One of my preferences is minimally invasive surgery, and most of my surgery is performed that way. Before I offer surgery as an option, I help my patients explore all the non-surgical options. Besides doing surgery, I spend a lot of time teaching and supporting patients working on weight loss and self-maintenance. I enjoy the diversity of my practice and seeing women from many different cultures. We are all the same in so many ways, and I learn as much from my patients as they do from me.

More about me
I became a clinician because it was a means of using my personality, interests, skills and training to connect with my community in a useful and positive way.
Patients who choose me can expect that I will do my best to find solutions for their problems. If I can't, I’ll support them in finding someone who can.
I like to read, write, listen to music and spend time with friends. I also like to travel and dabble in various crafts, from canning to sewing. I also love sci-fi.
I actually enjoy trying to improve my fitness level when working out regularly. I also love vegetables and other good foods.
They would describe me as easy to get along with, pensive at times and can find something interesting about a piece of dust... a bit of a geek.
I wanted to be a veterinarian. Luckily, my mother allowed me to collect a sort of menagerie of animals during my youth.
Treat your patients like you would want your mother, father and siblings treated when they are at their most vulnerable. A chief resident said this when I was a medical student, and it has always stuck with me.
There are truly seasons here most of the time. You get to enjoy the beauty of each.
I am a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
