Formulary changes effective July 1, 2011
Every three years, HealthPartners reviews its formularies to make sure all of the covered medicines are safe, high quality and cost-effective. This year the formularies were reviewed, resulting in changes that are projected to save approximately 1.2 percent in total pharmacy costs.
Overall, there are some additions and some deletions that will affect less than 3 percent of members. The greatest volume will come from diabetic products – insulin and the associated testing strips. Medicines that are being removed will be replaced by products that are just as safe and effective, but offer greater overall value. Some of these changes will give members new options to save money.
We're taking a member-centered approach to the transition that will give members sufficient time to work with their doctor and pharmacy to make the necessary changes. Letters will be sent to notify affected members of this change with 60 to 90 days to switch to a medicine that's on the formulary or pay a higher cost (either their non-formulary copay or the full cost of the medicine depending on their benefits).
