ST. PAUL, Minn. — Nov. 20, 2014 — HealthPartners today announced plans to begin construction of a new neuroscience center on Phalen Boulevard in St. Paul, near the HealthPartners Specialty Centers and Regions Hospital. It will be the largest free–standing neuroscience center in the Upper Midwest and one of only a few in the country. The building will bring together nationally recognized programs for stroke, spine care, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, brain and spine tumors and other neurological disorders.

HealthPartners is making this commitment to neuroscience at a time when stroke and Alzheimer’s are among the leading causes of death in the U.S., the number of people with dementia is expected to double in the next 20 years, and pain is one of the most common reasons people visit the doctor.

“There is so much need for these services, and that need is growing,” says HealthPartners President and CEO Mary Brainerd. “Our vision is to create both a place and program that can support patients and families – where care and support is linked and coordinated across specialties and clinical services.”

Highlights of the project include:

  • 4 story, 130,000 square foot, free-standing building
  • Located less than one mile from Regions Hospital
  • On site lab, x–ray and MRI
  • Dedicated space for neurological rehabilitation, including physical, occupational and speech therapy
  • Access to research and clinical trials

As an integrated health care organization with hospitals, clinics, a health plan, research, education and some of the region’s top neuroscience experts, HealthPartners is uniquely positioned to provide high-quality, convenient and coordinated care to patients with neurological illnesses.

“One of the things I’m most excited about is the ability to bring quality neuroscience providers, programs and research together under one roof,” says Bret Haake, MD, HealthPartners assistant medical director of neurosciences. “Bringing together this level of expertise will create a one-stop-shop for the patients in our community with neurological symptoms or disorders.”

Construction on the new building is scheduled to begin in the spring and should be completed by early 2017.
