HealthPartners® Freedom plan earns a Medicare Five out of Five (5) Star Rating

Freedom is one of just 17 health plans in the U.S. to receive Medicare's highest overall rating in 2017

October 17, 2016

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — HealthPartners® Freedom (Cost) plan has again received a Five out of Five (5) Star Rating* from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Freedom is one of only 17 health plans in the nation, and the only health plan in Minnesota, to receive the highest overall rating.

“At HealthPartners, we are dedicated to supporting the best possible health for our members, and to being easy, simple and convenient for members to use,” said Mary Brainerd, President and CEO. “We’re proud to have these efforts recognized by a 5 star ranking. Most important, it’s an honor to see the meaningful difference we’re making in the lives of our members.”

This is the second year in a row that the Freedom plan has received the highest overall rating from CMS. The Freedom plan also received a 5-Star Rating in 2013.

About the Ratings

Each year, CMS evaluates all Medicare plans in the nation. Plans are rated on a scale of one to five stars, with five being the highest rating a plan can get.

The ratings can help consumers evaluate the quality and service of plans. Ratings are based on a plan’s overall performance across five categories:

  • Staying healthy (e.g., screenings, tests and vaccines).
  • Managing chronic conditions.
  • Member experience with the plan.
  • Member complaints and changes in the plan’s performance.
  • Plan customer service (e.g., how well a plan handles member appeals).

Consumers who are eligible for Medicare can switch to a 5-Star rated plan once from December 8 – November 30. Ratings are available on the Plan Finder at www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan.

Another HealthPartners Medicare plan, Minnesota Senior Health Options (MSHO), once again received a 4.5-Star rating. This makes it five years in a row. MSHO is a plan exclusively for individuals who have both Medicare and Medicaid (medical assistance).

*Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5-Star rating system. Star ratings are calculated each year and may change from one year to the next.
