Does cranberry juice actually prevent bladder infections?

Recent studies suggest the home remedy doesn’t work

Women have been told for years that drinking cranberry juice can prevent and cure urinary tract infections (UTIs). But recent studies suggest it’s just an old wives’ tale.

UTIs are infections anywhere between the kidneys and urethra, where urine comes out. They are most common among women. They’re caused by bacteria. And they often cause pain or burning when you go to the bathroom.

Cranberry juice, crabby extracts and cranberry supplements are often recommended to prevent or cure UTIs. But studies have found the benefits to be minimal, if any.

So if cranberry doesn’t prevent UTIs, what does? Emptying your bladder as much as possible when you go to the bathroom. And, for women, urinating shortly after having sex.

There is also no proof that cranberry juice or supplements can cure a UTI. Instead, they are generally treated with antibiotics.
