Avoiding common spring break illnesses

Spring break is just around the corner. That means people will be traveling to their favorite vacation spots for a week of fun and relaxation. Spring break is supposed to be a time to recharge, but it is important to be prepared.

Dr. Larry Richmond, a family medicine doctor with Park Nicollet Clinic in Plymouth, shares his tips to stay healthy during spring break.

What are some of the easiest ways to avoid getting sick during spring break?

If you are going somewhere tropical, be sure to read up on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the types of illnesses that are common.

Stick with bottled water to avoid bacteria or water-based illnesses. And be sure you use sunscreen and wear sunglasses to avoid sunburn, eye damage and skin cancer.

For people who are traveling by plane, what tips would you offer?

If you are packing medicine, make sure it is labeled and carried-on instead of checking. You should also carry a card with your health information on it in your wallet in the case of emergency.

If you’re flying, dryness and infection can be issues. Saline spray will help with dryness, and regular hand washing can help avoid germs from airplanes.

If you do come back with some kind of sickness when should you see a doctor?

For sinus pain use saline spray and ibuprofen and see if that helps. If you have a fever or pain that lasts more than 1-2 weeks, see a doctor.
