When can I change Medicare plans?
If you are eligible for Medicare, you have the option to select a new plan every year during The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). We know the idea of switching can seem like a big change – but you should be sure that the plan you’ve chosen fits your needs.
There are some Medicare enrollment timelines that are important to know about:
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP):
This is the seven month window for you to enroll around your 65th birthday. It starts three months before your birthday and ends three months after your birthday.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP):
This runs every year October 15 to December 7.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP):
This is an enrollment period for special circumstances. This could include a move out of your plan’s service area, eligibility changes and more.

When the time comes to pick a plan (or switch plans) you’ll probably look for a few key things like:
- Your own health care needs, and type of coverage for medical care
- Whether or not your doctor is in-network
- Prescription medication (Part D coverage)
- Extra benefits, like travel coverage and gym memberships
