Healthgrades study: HealthPartners hospitals in top 100 for pulmonary, stroke, critical care, orthopedic surgery and joint replacement

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Oct. 23, 2012 - Healthgrades, an independent organization that evaluates quality of care at hospitals nationwide, ranks two hospitals in HealthPartners family of care as among the best in the nation for treatment of several conditions. Regions Hospital earned recognition as one of America’s 100 best hospitals for pulmonary, stroke and critical care. Lakeview Hospital is ranked among the top 100 hospitals for orthopedic surgery and joint replacement. In addition, Lakeview is ranked among the top 5 percent for outstanding patient experience.

Healthgrades rates hospitals based on clinical data submitted to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services. The ratings are part of American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2013: Healthgrades Report to the Nation which evaluates the performance of approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide across nearly 30 of the most common conditions and procedures.

Five-star rating associated with lower death and complication rates

The report awarded Regions a five star rating for neurosurgery, valve surgery, repair of abdominal aorta and treatment of heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respiratory failure and sepsis. Lakeview earned a five star rating for total knee and hip replacement, back and neck surgery and hip fracture treatment. Patients treated in hospitals receiving five stars had, on average, a 75 percent lower risk of dying and 61 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication than in one-star hospitals, according to Healthgrades.

Other national awards for quality care

Last month, the Joint Commission recognized Regions Hospital as among the best in the nation for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. Top performing hospitals achieve 95 percent or above on every measure related to these conditions. The Joint Commission is an independent, non-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States.
