  Eat smart

Fruits and veggies through a straw?

We've all heard the words "don't forget your fruits and veggies." And it's true. Consuming a daily dose of fruits and vegetables provides good-for-you nutrients that keep us healthy and strong. But who says you have to eat them?

Fruit and veggie smoothie

Making juice and smoothies is a great way to get your daily dose of fruits and veggies!

A growing number of people are choosing to "juice" the nutrients out of fruits and vegetables. These liquefied nutrients are tasty and they can help you lose weight because the fibers extracted from the pulp will make you feel fuller for longer.

While juice and smoothies can be a great meal on-the-go, there are a few things to keep in mind.

  • When buying a juicer or blender, look for one that doesn't filter out the pulp. You want to keep the powerful nutrients, rather than pour them down the drain.
  • Be aware of how much sugar is in the fruit you're using. A good rule of thumb is to use mostly veggies and add a little fruit as a sweetener.
  • If you plan to use a smoothie as a meal replacement, adding protein powder or peanut butter is a great way to supplement the protein you'd normally be getting. To be safe, check with your doctor or nutritionist before making any major changes to your diet.
