HealthPartners is taking a major step forward in environmental stewardship with the creation of a new leadership position. Shannon Neale, MD, has been named Medical Director of Sustainability, a role that will guide HealthPartners in improving energy efficiency, reducing waste and promoting environmentally-responsible best practices.
Dr. Neale joined the organization in 2002. She’s a family medicine physician at the Park Nicollet Clinic St. Louis Park Creekside and brings more than a decade of clinical leadership experience to a position believed to be unique among health care systems in Minnesota.
“We know a clean and safe environment is an important foundation for good health,” said Dr. Mark Sannes, MD, chief medical officer at HealthPartners. “By naming a medical director of sustainability, we’re reinforcing our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and advancing solutions that protect the long-term health of our patients, members and community.”
From energy-intensive hospitals open 24/7, to products and pharmaceuticals that have historically been single-use and disposable, carbon footprints have long been a concern in health care, and something that Dr. Neale studied while earning her Master of Public Health degree.
“Though I see the waste we create in our health care jobs daily, I was shocked to learn just how much impact the U.S. health care system has on the environment and particularly greenhouse gas emissions,” Dr. Neale said. “I decided I couldn’t let this go and needed to start educating myself and others about what was happening.”
Dr. Neale responded by creating and leading a clinician and climate sustainability group at HealthPartners. She also regularly participates in efforts through the Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate organization as well as Hennepin County’s Heat Resiliency work.
“Being good environmental stewards is as important to the communities we serve as the great care we provide,” Dr. Neale said. “I’m excited to see what improvements can be made in this new role, and I also hope it inspires other organizations to be more environmentally mindful.”
