Regions Hospital expands inpatient mental health services

The hospital added 20 rooms and beds to its on-campus mental health building.

January 12, 2022

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Regions Hospital today announced the 20 rooms and beds it added as part of an on-campus mental health building expansion are staffed and in use. The east metro’s largest provider of inpatient mental health services announced the expansion from 100 to 120 beds in July.

Regions served about 3,300 patients a year and operated at an average of 97 percent capacity before the expansion. The hospital is expected to care for 600-plus more patients, annually, with the latest addition. The new rooms will also open Regions Emergency Center beds for patients with various health care needs.

“More people can receive timely care in a supportive and healing environment,” said Christine Stanson, MD, medical director of inpatient mental health for HealthPartners. “A full or near-capacity hospital may lead to people not seeking the mental health services they need. Any extra beds help ease some of that burden if people are able to get those services quickly.”

Together with HealthPartners, Regions is a leading provider of comprehensive mental health programs such as:

  • Specialized care for mental health at the Regions Emergency Center, serving about 9,000 patients experiencing mental health crises each year
  • Lee and Penny Anderson HeroCare Program for Veterans, a specialized care program for veterans, military members and their families that includes advocates who help patients access military benefits and resources
  • DayBridge, a partial-hospitalization program for adults who need intensive therapy but can safely continue living in their communities

The expansion was made possible through donors of the Regions Hospital Foundation.
