Sean P. Boley, MD
Medical Toxicology Staff Physician, Regions Hospital
About
Sean Boley is a medical toxicologist at Regions Hospital and an emergency medicine physician at United Hospital with Emergency Care Consultants. He completed his residency in emergency medicine in 2015 at Regions Hospital, medical toxicology fellowship at Regions Hospital in 2017, and obtained his board certification in addiction medicine in 2022. His research interests are broad and span emergency medicine, medical toxicology, and addiction medicine. His emergency medicine research has focused on race-related health disparities in several aspects of emergency care, including the triage process, opioid prescribing, restraint, as well as disparities in the language that is used in emergency medicine notes. His toxicology research interests include the management of cardiovascular toxins, central anti-muscarinic delirium, the treatment of severe acetaminophen overdose, and unique presentations of common poisonings. Most recently, he has begun investigating various aspects of opioid and alcohol use disorder, specifically the management of complicated withdrawal.

Conducting research since: 2015

Education and Training:
Medical Degree, Penn State College of Medicine, 2012
Emergency Medicine Residency, Regions Hospital, 2015
Medical Toxicology Fellowship, Regions Hospital 2017

Research insterests include:
Cardiovascular toxins
Health disparities in emergency medicine
Opioid use disorder

Current research activities and funding:
At the Institute, he is currently involved in several ongoing projects including a retrospective analysis of patients treated for opioid withdrawal, a prospective study on patients treated with phenobarbital for alcohol withdrawal, and is in the process of developing a prospective trial comparing full agonist opioid therapy for severe opioid withdrawal.
