We describe a retrospective study to validate the use of the Surgical Apgar Score in determining post-procedure risk of death, complications and resource utilization in a population undergoing general and orthopedic surgery. We compared the predictive ability of the Apgar score and the more commonly used ASA physical classification score. A hybrid Surgical Apgar and ASA score may have greater predictive ability and utility in surgical care quality improvement.
