Methodist Hospital opened its doors in 1959 with 276 beds. The six-floor building added 24-hour emergency services in 1969, followed by a cardiac intensive care unit in 1970.

As the need for area health services grew, it became clear that community support was needed. In 1971, a group of hospital trustees, medical staff, women’s auxiliary members, and community leaders came together to approve a plan for fundraising, and in 1973 Methodist Hospital Foundation was established. That first year, the Foundation raised $26,000 and awarded four grants totaling $8,511 for medical library books, an intravenous injection trainer, lab staff education and a Resusci Annie CPR training mannequin.

Within 10 years, the foundation awarded $1.5 million in grants for research, education, programs and equipment for the hospital.

Near the end of the 20th century, Methodist Hospital merged with Park Nicollet Clinic, and the newly named Park Nicollet Foundation expanded its mission to serve community health needs. Today, the Foundation’s mission of improving the health and well-being of our patients, families and community describes the collaboration and scope of our work. We use philanthropy to strengthen the patient and family experience, promote innovation and research, and respond to the health care needs of our community.
