Patient safety
Our commitment to patient safety
Our dedication to safe, high-quality care is put into practice throughout our work. Each and every member of our team follows our four foundational safety behaviors:
- Communicate clearly with patients, families and colleagues.
- Pay close attention to details.
- Speak up to ensure safe patient care.
- Work together to continuously improve our care and systems.
How we create a safer health care environment
Whether it’s minimizing the risk of hospital-acquired infections and patient falls, or ensuring you get the right dose of the right medicine at the right time, your safety is at the heart of everything we do.
Safety measures that we’re committed to include:
- Partnering with our patients so that their experiences and preferences are heard and understood.
- Strict attention to medication management, infection control, pressure injury prevention and other guardrails.
- Electronic health records with safety alerts to reduce the risk of human error.
- Barcoding for safe medication administration and lab draws.
- A system for all colleagues to report and follow up on safety issues.
- Continuing education and hands-on training with the HealthPartners Institute’s Clinical Simulation Center.
How you can help
You can make your care even safer by being an involved and informed member of your care team. This means:
- Speaking with your care team anytime you have questions or concerns. Always ask for clarification if you need it.
- Being an active participant in all decisions about your treatment.
- Knowing what medications you take and why you take them. Medication-related errors are the most common type of error in health care.
- Paying attention to the care you receive. Make sure you’re getting the right treatments from the right health care professionals.
- If you are hospitalized, taking a few minutes to read the handout “Welcome. A guide for patients and families” for more tips on staying safe during your stay.
Safety is our top priority for every person who walks through our doors. Thank you for your partnership in making HealthPartners hospitals and clinics safe places to get care.
