Sinus infections (also called sinusitis) can be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi. To treat a sinus infection effectively, it’s important to understand the underlying cause. Our experienced clinicians can determine the cause of your sinus infection and tailor a treatment plan to clear up the infection, and get you feeling better, fast.
Sinus infections caused by viruses are most common. If your sinus infection showed up after a cold, it’s likely viral sinusitis.
Common symptoms of viral sinus infections include congestion, facial pressure, runny nose, postnasal drip (when mucus from your sinuses makes its way into your throat), headache and fatigue.
If your sinus infection is caused by a virus, your treatment plan may include recommendations for specific medications and self-care tips to help relieve your symptoms. Antibiotics aren’t recommended because they’re not effective against viruses.
If your symptoms are more severe or if they go away and come back, the cause may be bacterial sinusitis.
Bacterial sinus infections can have the same symptoms as viral sinus infections, but they tend to be more severe and longer lasting. Symptoms can easily last more than 10 days without treatment. Bacterial sinus infections can also cause fever, facial pain and thick, yellow-green colored mucus.
Depending on your symptoms, your treatment plan may include antibiotics, medicine to thin mucus, nasal spray, pain medications and self-care tips. If you need a prescription, we’ll send it directly to your preferred pharmacy.
Fungal sinusitis is more common in people with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms tend to last longer and can be more severe than typical viral or bacterial sinus infections. Mucus may be thick, unusually sticky, and have a strong foul odor. Fungal infections can also cause distinctive symptoms, such as a reduced sense of smell, facial numbness, swelling or even vision changes.
Fungal sinus infections require more specialized care. If you think you may have fungal sinusitis, schedule an appointment with one of our primary care doctors. Once we determine the cause of your symptoms, we will guide you toward the most appropriate treatment.
When you have a sinus infection, getting treatment can help you get better, faster. E-visits make it easy to get fast, affordable treatment for sinus infections.
To start an e-visit, sign into your online account, or create a new account. Then, we’ll guide you through questions about symptoms, medications, allergies and insurance. From start to finish, submitting an e-visit usually takes about 10 minutes.
Once you submit your e-visit, one of our experienced nurse practitioners reviews your answers, determines a diagnosis and creates a treatment plan. As soon as they’re done, we’ll send you an email letting you know it’s ready. We typically deliver treatment plans in as little as two hours.
We review e-visits 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays. If you submit an e-visit outside these hours, your treatment plan will arrive the following morning.
E-visits are usually covered by insurance. Depending on your plan, the cost may be as low as $0 with insurance. Without insurance, the cost can be up to $89, but never more. Whether you use insurance or not, there are never any hidden fees or extra costs.
We’re able to treat most sinus infection symptoms with an e-visit. But if we can’t treat you, we’ll connect you with the best care option, and you won’t be charged for the e-visit.
