What happens during an eating disorder assessment?

An eating disorder assessment is an appointment that’s used to review a person’s symptoms and to determine what type of care and support will be most helpful. Depending on your preference, the assessment can be done in person or through a video visit.

During the initial assessment appointment, we’ll ask questions about symptoms and medical history, as well as address any concerns you have. At the end of the assessment, we’ll connect you or your loved one with an eating disorder care team that’s tailored to your needs.

How your eating disorder care team supports you during eating disorder recovery

Eating disorders are complex conditions that affect the body, mind and emotional well-being. Because of this, effective treatment requires more than one expert. It takes a team of specialists working together to understand and address all the thoughts, behaviors and health challenges that come with an eating disorder. At Melrose Center, our eating disorder specialists communicate regularly and collaborate closely. This coordinated approach helps create a strong foundation for lasting recovery.

Each person’s care team is thoughtfully assembled based on their diagnosis, symptoms, age and individual needs. Typically, the core team includes a mental health therapist, medical expert and eating disorder dietitian. But care teams can be bigger or smaller, including fewer specialists or additional experts such as a psychiatrist, occupational therapist or physical therapist.

Mental health specialists help manage and change thoughts, emotions and behaviors

In most cases, the treatment team includes a mental health therapist who treats eating disorders. This therapist will use different types of evidence-based therapy to help you or your loved one work through the emotions and behaviors around the eating disorder. During eating disorder treatment, patients typically meet with their therapist more frequently than with other specialists.

As part of treatment, some people may also meet with an eating disorder psychiatrist who will review their medications and make changes to support their recovery. People with eating disorders may have other mental health concerns, such as depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Medical experts care for your physical health

Clinicians on an eating disorder care team identify and treat health problems caused by eating disorders, such as dehydration, malnutrition, electrolyte imbalances and heart problems.

When you or your loved one meet with a clinician at Melrose Center, they’ll ask about symptoms and overall health, do a physical exam and check vital signs. If there are specific health concerns, the checkup may also include blood tests or an electrocardiogram (ECG). We may also refer you to specialists for additional tests such as a bone density scan (DEXA).

The clinicians at Melrose Center focus on managing symptoms and conditions caused by eating disorders. It’s important that you or your loved one continue to see a primary care doctor for routine care and help managing ongoing health conditions.

Medical specialists address health risks and complications of eating disorders

Eating disorders can cause serious, and sometimes life-threatening health problems that impact nearly every system in the body. Caring for these symptoms often requires specialized, higher-level care.

Melrose Center is part of the HealthPartners care system. So when you work with Melrose Center, you or your loved one can receive advanced care for the eating disorder and co-occurring conditions, such as diabetes, heart concerns, or drug or alcohol misuse with eating disorders.

In particular, Melrose Center is nationally known for caring for people with type 1 diabetes and an eating disorder (diabulimia). We have a certified diabetes educator who offers education and guidance during individual and group sessions, and provides support during meals to help promote balanced, informed eating. When appropriate, we partner with endocrinologists at HealthPartners.
