Preconception counseling and care

Get expert preconception counseling and care to help you prepare for getting pregnant

You’re ready to try for a baby. And we’re ready to help support you in any way we can – beginning with a preconception checkup.

Why is preconception care so important? Because your physical, mental and emotional health can have an impact on your chances of conception and a healthy pregnancy.

A preconception visit with an OB-GYN or certified nurse midwife connects you with a family planning expert. They’ll work with you to understand your family goals and help you address any health issues before you get pregnant.

What happens at a preconception visit?

If you’re ready to start trying now or within the next three months, make a preconception appointment with an OB-GYN or midwife for the next available time that works for you.

Your visit will feel very similar to an annual physical but will include additional counseling geared toward family planning and pregnancy.

For starters, your doctor will talk with you about your medical and reproductive history, current medications, your home and work environments, diet and exercise habits, lifestyle factors such as smoking or drinking alcohol, and more. In addition, your doctor will likely do a physical exam, which may include a pap smear and pelvic exam. And depending on other factors such as your age or current health conditions, additional lab tests may be ordered.

You’ll also have time to get your questions answered and talk about next steps in your pre-pregnancy planning journey. This is the perfect time to talk to your doctor about what’s on your mind.
