Accessing teen health information online

Once you’re a teenager (aged 13-17), you can start to take care of your health at HealthPartners in partnership with your parent or legal guardian. A great first step is to create your own online account.

Benefits of having your own online account

Your online account has a lot of helpful information and tools to help you manage your health.

For example, if you’re a HealthPartners or Park Nicollet patient, you can:

  • Schedule, view and cancel your appointments
  • View test results
  • View vaccination records for sports and school forms
  • Manage your medicines

And if you’re a health insurance member, meaning you have HealthPartners health insurance, you can:

How to set up your teen patient account

To start the process of getting your own online account:

  1. First, you’ll need to have your own cell phone or a device that can receive text messages.
  2. Then, visit a clinic with your parent or legal guardian to get access to your care information. You can do this at one of your scheduled appointments or by just stopping in.
  3. Once you arrive, tell the clinic staff (front desk, nurse, or your doctor or clinician) that you’d like your own online account. If your parent or legal guardian gives their consent, the clinic staff will text you a link to get your account started.

To get started, you’ll need the ID number on your health insurance card.

You can make your account in one of two ways:

Because you’re both a health care patient and a health insurance member, you can create an online account in a couple different ways. The simplest way to get started is:

  1. Make sure you have your own cell phone or a device that can receive text messages.
  2. Then, visit a clinic with your parent or legal guardian to get access to your care information. You can do this at one of your scheduled appointments or by just stopping in.
  3. Once you arrive, tell the clinic staff (front desk, nurse, or your doctor or clinician) you’d like your own online account. They’ll send you a text to get things started, and you’ll have access to both your health care and insurance information in your online account.

If you decide to create an account on our website or by calling the web support team directly at 952-853-8888 (TTY 711), you’ll have access to your insurance information only. If you want access to your health care information too, you’ll need to visit a clinic with a parent or guardian.

Parent or guardian access to teen information online

A health care proxy allows a person – called the proxy – to see the medical information of someone else through their own online account to assist in that person's health care. As your health care proxy, your parent or legal guardian can oversee your care by making appointments for you, managing your medicines and keeping track of your medical information through their own online account. When you’re younger than 13 at HealthPartners, your health care proxies have access to your medical information.

But as you get older, things change:

  • Once you turn 13 at HealthPartners, your parents or legal guardians still have the right to see most of your health record and make medical decisions for you, but you have the right to keep certain health care services confidential from your parents or guardians. We encourage you to talk about your health with your parents or guardians.  To help in that process, you can still grant your parents or guardians (proxies) full access to your health information if you want, but you don’t have to.
  • At age 18, your proxies’ access ends automatically. But if you want to re-add a proxy as an adult (or pick a new one), you can.

Access teen insurance information online

When it comes to a parent or legal guardian, they’ll also be able to access your health insurance information if:

  • You and your parent or legal guardian are both on the same HealthPartners insurance plan; AND
  • They’re the plan policyholder

If both of these are true, your parent or legal guardian can:

  • Order ID cards for you
  • See all your insurance claim information if you’re under 13
  • See only limited information about your insurance claims if you’re 13 or older

For example, if you’re 16 and you see a mental health professional, your parent or guardian could see how much a visit costs, but they wouldn’t see what kind of visit you had.
