TRIA Rink, the official practice facility of the Minnesota Wild and the official home ice for the Minnesota Whitecaps, opened its doors in February 2018 on the top floor of the Treasure Island Center. Located just a few blocks from the Xcel Energy Center, the rooftop rink serves as a special place for the Minnesota hockey community.

TRIA and the Wild have been partnering ever since their inaugural season in 2000. TRIA orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Joel Boyd and Dr. Brad Nelson, serve as the official team physicians. The two of them travel with the team to practices and games, and help treat players to get them back on the ice.

In addition to providing the home ice for the Whitecaps, TRIA also partnered with the women’s hockey team for their inaugural season in the National Women’s Hockey League, where they went undefeated and won the Isobel Cup. A team from TRIA serves as the medical staff for the team, including Dr. Aimee Custer, Dr. Caitlin Chambers, Dr. Anne Moore and Amy Hamilton, ATC. This is the first all-female medical staff supporting a professional sports team.

TRIA Rink has an entire wall of windows that overlook the city of St. Paul. Whether on the ice or in the stands, players and fans are able to embody the community relationship.

The rink offers an opportunity for the State of Hockey to come together and skate on the same ice as their hometown hockey heroes. The rink is used for youth hockey teams and events, open skates and partnerships with local organizations. For example, DinoMights, a new youth hockey program to move into St. Paul, now uses TRIA Rink to reach at-risk children in the community. Through the game of hockey, DinoMights help urban youth develop important life skills. Hamline University’s men’s and women’s hockey teams use the cutting edge rink for their home ice as well.

TRIA also opened a new state-of-the-art orthopedic clinic in the lower level of the building. “It’s great that we can offer orthopedic care and physical therapy in downtown St. Paul,” says TRIA primary care sports medicine physician, Dr. Steven Greer. “We are building some wonderful relationships with the local businesses, schools and club sports.”
