Myositis support for members

You rely on your muscles a lot. So when they’re not working the way you expect, it can be concerning. If you’re experiencing chronic (long-term) muscle weakness, especially in your larger muscles, you may have myositis.

There are several different types of myositis, with several different causes. If you’re diagnosed, you and your care team can work together on a treatment plan for improving your physical fitness and enhancing your quality of life.

Basics of myositis

Myositis is a condition that causes muscle inflammation. It’s rare, affecting around 75,000 people in the U.S. yearly. The condition typically starts when people are in their 50s. But it can affect people of any age, including children.

The causes of myositis aren’t well understood. It can occur spontaneously. But it can also be triggered by certain viral infections, autoimmune conditions like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis (RA), or other health conditions. Women and African American people are also more likely to develop it.

There are several types of myositis. Two particular types are:

  • Dermatomyositis – This type of myositis can cause muscle weakness, a skin rash, calcium deposits under the skin, and trouble talking or swallowing. When dermatomyositis affects children, it’s called juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM).
  • Polymyositis – This type of myositis can cause muscle weakness that affects both sides of your body. When polymyositis affects children, it’s called juvenile polymyositis (JPM).
