Changing Medicare plans?

Sometimes change can lead to something great. Consider switching to a Medicare plan that combines great care and insurance.

When can I change Medicare plans?

If you are eligible for Medicare, you have the option to select a new plan every year during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). We know the idea of switching can seem like a big change – but you should be sure that the plan you’ve chosen fits your needs.

Enrollment periods

There are some Medicare enrollment timelines that are important to know about:

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP):

This is the seven-month window for you to enroll around your 65th birthday. It starts three months before your birthday and ends three months after your birthday.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP):

This runs every year Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP):

This is an enrollment period for special circumstances. This could include a move out of your plan’s service area, eligibility changes and more.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

This runs every year Jan. 1 to March 31. It’s a one-time opportunity for Medicare Advantage enrollees to change their coverage.

When the time comes to pick a plan (or switch plans) you’ll probably look for a few key things like:

  • Your own health care needs, and type of coverage for medical care
  • Whether or not your doctor is in-network
  • Prescription medication (Part D coverage)
  • Extra benefits, like travel coverage and gym memberships

At HealthPartners, you have options for Medicare coverage. If you’re ready to enroll, you can pick a plan with our easy-to-use tool. Otherwise, browse plans and see what’s available in your state.
