When can I change Medicare plans?
If you are eligible for Medicare, you have the option to select a new plan every year during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). We know the idea of switching can seem like a big change – but you should be sure that the plan you’ve chosen fits your needs.
There are some Medicare enrollment timelines that are important to know about:
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP):
This is the seven-month window for you to enroll around your 65th birthday. It starts three months before your birthday, includes your birthday month and ends three months after your birthday.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP):
This runs every year Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP):
This is an enrollment period for special circumstances. This could include a move out of your plan’s service area, eligibility changes and more.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period
This runs every year from January 1 through March 31. It’s a one-time opportunity for Medicare Advantage enrollees to change their plans.
