When can I change Medicare plans?
If you are eligible for Medicare, you have the option to select a new plan every year during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). We know the idea of switching can seem like a big change – but you should be sure that the plan you’ve chosen fits your needs.
There are some Medicare enrollment timelines that are important to know about:
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP):
This is the seven-month window for you to enroll around your 65th birthday. It starts three months before your birthday and ends three months after your birthday.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP):
This runs every year Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP):
This is an enrollment period for special circumstances. This could include a move out of your plan’s service area, eligibility changes and more. Minnesota residents who were enrolled in a Cost plan that closed for 2019 have a Special Enrollment Period from Dec. 8, 2018, to Feb. 28, 2019.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period
This runs every year Jan. 1 to March 31. It’s a one-time opportunity for Medicare Advantage enrollees to change their coverage.
