What are HealthPartners Medicare Cost plans?

Our Medicare Cost plans work along with Medicare Parts A and B (Original Medicare) to give you additional coverage, benefits and perks. We offer several ways to get the care you need at a cost you can manage.

  • Low monthly premiums with $0 copays – Our plans have affordable monthly premiums with copays as low as $0 for primary and specialty care visits.
  • Dental – Several of our plans include dental coverage, plus options for additional coverage – including $0 in-network preventive and diagnostic care.
  • Benefits while traveling – Our plans include in-network coverage for up to nine months of the year when you travel inside the U.S. but outside of the plan's service area. You’ll also have access to pre-travel consultations and worldwide emergency and urgent care coverage, with additional assistance available through Assist America®.*
  • Hearing – Get routine hearing exams with copays as low as $0, plus coverage for hearing aids through TruHearing® with select plans.
  • Vision – Receive an annual benefit allowance for non-Medicare-covered prescription eyewear with most plans.
  • Fitness programs – SilverSneakers® helps you stay fit and active with a gym membership and home fitness kits at no additional cost.
Medicare Cost 101

In counties where Medicare Advantage plans are limited, you may have the option to enroll in a Medicare Cost plan instead.

Like Medicare Advantage plans, Cost plans often offer additional benefits and perks on top of Original Medicare. Some Cost plans include Part D prescription drug coverage. While the benefits are often similar, Cost plans operate a little differently from Medicare Advantage plans.

Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, you don’t need to be enrolled in both Original Medicare Parts A and B to enroll in a Medicare Cost plan. You can enroll even if you only have Part B.

Also, while Medicare Advantage plans take the place of Original Medicare, Cost plans work alongside Original Medicare. This means you can drop your Cost plan and go back to Original Medicare at any time. It also means that if you go out of network for care, your Original Medicare benefits will kick in for covered services.

Medicare Cost plans often include features and benefits that you don’t get with Original Medicare, including:

  • Generally lower costs than Original Medicare for in-network doctor visits and covered services
  • Dental care
  • Travel coverage
  • Services like routine eye exams and hearing exams
  • Fitness programs to keep you healthy

With Medicare Cost plans, you can get prescription drug coverage through:

  • A stand-alone Part D plan that works alongside your Cost plan (you can enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan whether or not your Cost plan includes Part D coverage)
  • A Cost plan that includes Part D coverage

Like Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Cost plans have a network of doctors, providers, clinics and hospitals, which helps to keep costs low.

But unlike Medicare Advantage plans, if you go out of your Cost plan’s network for covered care, your Original Medicare benefits will kick in. If that happens, you’ll pay the Part A or Part B coinsurance and deductibles.

  • You have seven months to enroll when you first get Medicare. Enroll anytime during the three months before you turn age 65, the month you turn 65 or the three months after you turn 65.
  • If you already have Medicare, you can enroll during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 each year.
  • If the Cost plan has a five-star rating, you can make a one-time switch from Dec. 8 to Nov. 30.
  • You may have other chances to sign up using a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

Medicare plan features that go the extra mile

At HealthPartners, we believe that a great Medicare Cost plan goes beyond excellent benefits and perks. We go further by making it easier to get the most out of your plan with flexible options for getting the care you need while managing costs.

If you want or need to see a specialist, you don’t need to wait for a referral from your primary care doctor.

All Medicare Cost plans include unlimited, no-cost visits to our online clinic Virtuwell. At Virtuwell, you can get a diagnosis, treatment plan and prescription for more than 60 common conditions – all online with no appointments, waiting rooms or video calls.

We work to bring more to our plans this year and every year – making sure that your plan fits the way you live today, tomorrow and beyond.
